Following that inner voice

How often do you have a gut instinct, that intuitive feeling, something inside guiding you only to overrule it and not even consider its guidance or alternatively work it to death over analyzing it?  It is easy to become caught up in other people’s opinions about what is right or wrong or even so concerned with other people’s lives that your own needs and wants vanish into the ether.

Today the world is driven by the media, mobile phones, the internet and television.  It is so easy to become overloaded or drown in the information bombarding you. There seems to be so little quiet time or space to stop and take a step back to get in touch with the inner self and intuition. That inner awareness, the inner voice or intuition can tell us so much about how we feel or alert us to things that need attention or not may not feel quite right.

So often with information coming at us in all directions, it is easy to rush at things or become entrenched in a loop of thinking that becomes locked in the past or future. Mobile phones are always with us and there is an expectation that we are contactable 24/7. The internet is 24/7 so information can be assed at all times and e-mails ping into our in boxes at any time of the day.

I have had people who are surprised that I don’t always have my mobile phone glued to my ear all day. When I am working teaching or as a therapist, I have my mobile turned off. So often, when I am talking to people they are texting or constantly looking at their mobile I feel they are not connecting with themselves or me. This is how we make mistakes agree to things we don’t want to do and basically don’t communicate effectively.

As the songs says silence is golden and that silent space can be so useful and mind stilling. A little time out to check how you are, what you need, and how you are feeling is very helpful. When we don’t stop and log into our internal world to see how we are, it is easy to override feelings, emotions and needs. Then we wonder why we are tired, over emotional, frustrated, in a low mood or anxious.

The remedy is quite simple start stopping a few times a day and ask yourself the following:

  • How am I?                         It could be that you are tired, in pain, OK, busy, over thinking
  • What do I need?              It could be you are hungry, thirsty, need the loo
  • How do I feel?                  It could be that you are happy, sad, anxious, stressed

Tuning into yourself can help you to meet your needs and take care of you. It you are feeling stressed then maybe you are trying to do too much or over thinking. If you are feeling anxious where is the fear coming from. You might be thirsty this makes it hard to think if you are dehydrated. It could be that you are holding your breath and breathing in an anxious way. If you are hungry have you stopped to eat. So on many levels both physically and mentally it is good to stop and do a self scan to find out how you are and what  you might need.

Can the Can’ts

Can the can’ts came to me as a title for this blog as a thought for the day landed in my email in box this week. It made me think how much we say can’t in our day to day lives. The thought for the day which said, “Success comes in cans failures in can’ts

Managing Pain

If you have to manage pain on a regular basis it can be hard on you both mentally and physically. I was diagnosed with connective tissue disease three years ago which can cause pains within the joints. Pain can cause sleep disturbance, lower mood, tiredness and reduce concentration to name just a few.

Confidence

Clients and students often tell me that they lack confidence and self-belief as such this holds them back from being who and what they want to be or do. The media seems to be full of information about confidence building and all sorts of ideas on how to boost it. With all the information out there it is hard to know where to start especially if you lack confidence.
